Young Achievers Award Uganda handed out to disability inclusion trainer!

The annual Young Achievers Award in Uganda recognizes and celebrates outstanding youth in the Ugandan Community that have excelled in various realms such as the Arts, Entrepreneurship, Media and Journalism, Philanthropy, Innovation, Sports among others. In partnership with Reach A Hand Uganda, the main organizer of the YYA, Light for the World handed out this year’s Hero or Heroine Award and it was dedicated to an individual who has shown commitment, and put much personal efforts and energy in making disability inclusion work. Joyce Patricia Okwir, who is a project coordinator working with ZOA and trained as a Master Trainer by Light for the World, won the Heroine Award.

Patricia: My organization had no experience of inclusion, you can imagine how hard it was to change the mind set of my supervisors. Now we have five projects that mainstream disability in one project area. Many of the staff are now disability aware. It took advocacy with patience and wisdom.
