Millions affected by cyclone Idai in Mozambique

In Mozambique, 1.8 million people have been affected by the cyclone Idai. Authorities have identified as many as 27,764 vulnerable people. Light for the World is therefore committed to provide assistance to vulnerable people with disabilities who are affected by the cyclone. We do this by cooperating with international and local humanitarian aid organizations and other stakeholders. Together, we look for the best way how we can contribute to emergency aid on the spot. We focus on providing emergency assistance to people with disabilities, as they are particularly vulnerable in an emergency situation like this. In this way we can ensure that emergency aid organizations can make their accommodations accessible.

Concretely, we provide humanitarian aid by:

Making roads more accessible so that emergency services can pass.

  • Distributing food, medicine, emergency packages and other important among thousands of people.
  • Providing emergency assistance to children and adults with disabilities in Dondo and Beira. 2,000 people with disabilities live in these areas.
  • Training of aid organizations to specifically take into account the needs of people with disabilities.
  • Supporting refugee camps in the integration and rehabilitation of people with disabilities who are placed in Mozambique.
  • Providing the operating room of our eye clinic for emergency operations, as the hospital in Beira has been destroyed.
